Day 1

Marrakech → Tizi n'Tichka → Ait Ben Haddou → Dades Valley

A trip to the Sahara Desert, from Marrakech, starts at dawn, leaving the city heading toward the High Atlas Mountains. You will be going up toward the most famous mountain pass in Morocco, Tizi n’Tichka, connecting Marrakech to the southern desert. The scenery changes drastically from red mountains to small Berber villages and terraced valleys along your route.

After you cross the mountains the next stop is the historical Fortified Ksar of Ait Ben Haddou. Ait Ben Haddou is a traditional clay village that is one of the best-preserved examples of traditional architecture in Morocco Southern Region. When walking through the small passages of the village, you feel like you have traveled back in time to an ancient era. Due to the unusual vista of the village, it has been used in many international feature films and television shows.

Continuing your journey, you travel further towards the Valley of the Roses and the Dades region. As the sunlight of the afternoon softens the colours of the mountains, you travel to the Dades Valley, where there are dramatic rock formations and green oases that contrast greatly with the surrounding desert landscape. Here you will spend an evening relaxing and enjoying the hospitality of a traditional riad or guesthouse.

Day 2

Dades Valley → Todra Gorge → Erfoud → Merzouga

After consuming breakfast, we was lead southward deeper into Morocco until we reached one of this area’s more noteworthy spots known as Todra Gorge. This tourist spot features enormously tall cliff walls rising hundreds of meters over top of a narrow canyon where a stream runs through a valley covered with palm trees and surrounded by rocky walls.

As you continue your trek toward the next destination of your trip, the land surrounding you gets progressively drier with each passing mile. As we pass through desolate outlying desert towns and fossil-laden regions close (geographically) to the town of Erfoud, we begin to understand why these two locations are associated; Erfoud is home to thousands of date palm trees located just north of the Sahara.

Before long, we rounded a bend and came upon the vast golden sand dunes (known as Erg Chebbi) that border the outskirts of a small desert-side community (now considered artificial due to the huge influx of tourists). I hopped off the bus and hopped onto a camel’s back to quietly trek across desert sands as the sun changed color (from golden yellow to deep orange).

We spent the night at a traditional style camp located in the desert of Sahara, enjoying a traditional Moroccan dinner after which we listened to live local musicians while also having great views of the incredible number of stars (from the clear skies above) that exist throughout the universe.

Day 3

Nomads and Oasis Life

Early risers can scale a nearby sand mound to view a magnificent sunrise over the Sahara Desert, one of their most exceptional experiences on this trip. Following breakfast, you will begin touring the region of Merzouga.

Your day will provide insight into the desert culture. In Khamlia Village, home of the Gnawa music tradition, local artists play rhythms that depict the history of the desert community. This area is also home to some nomadic families who live in traditional tents and travel by foot and/or with animals over the desert landscape.

Next on the route is Rissani, a historical town that was once a vital point of rendezvous for caravans travelling through the Sahara. The traditional market here is very busy and authentic, where local merchants sell spices, dates, and fresh foods. Handcrafts and jewelry.

After the visit to Rissani, the route will go towards the Draa Valley through21 buttes landscape,34 shoes rocky plains. In the evening, you will arrive at the palm trees oasis towns of Agdz or Ouarzazate for an overnight in a comfortable hotel overlooking the valley.

Day 4

Agdz → Draa Valley → Ouarzazate → Marrakech.

Your final day starts with a scenic drive through the Draa Valley – one of Morocco’s most magnificent oasis areas. The Draa Valley consists of many kilometers of palm trees, numerous little towns and ancient earth-and-stone built Kasbah.

After a short drive through the Draa Valley, you’ll make your way to Ouarzazate (Gateway to the Desert), also well-known for having many historical movies made here if you have time for a visit to the well-known film studios.

From there, you’ll travel back through the High Atlas Mountains. As the road climbs toward Tizi n’Tichka pass for a second time, the beautiful scenery of wide open valleys and distant mountains will be revealed to you. You will arrive back in Marrakech early evening, ready to begin another wonderful chapter in your life’s experiences after this amazing Sahara Desert adventure.
